Second Nature is a zine and a love poem to an adopted place where I’m out of step, both culturally and agriculturally. I’m white in a community that’s more than 70% Black. I’m a novice native-plant gardener in a community that loves its grass. Working in the garden, I’ve had a lot of time to think about how to take root and thrive in a corner of the world; how to find my place and positively integrate in an already vibrant community, and in a natural environment well-suited to this corner of the world. With enough time and devotion, I hope it will become second nature.
